What are the qualities of a good link builder?
In the few months I have spent learning how to train link builders and content writers, I have often wondered what kind of link builder or writer should I mold these newbies into? To answer this question, I turn to the ever reliable World Wide Web for clues on the characteristics of a link builder. Mind you, I’m not looking for perfection, but for efficiency and results from my trainees, and identifying the qualities of a good link builder should help me achieve these goals.
After reading the posts by SEO and Link Building experts such as Cheryl Estorgio, Sumit Roy, Raj Dash and Jessica Bowman, I found my self reading avidly Eric Ward’s SearchEngineLand article A Portrait of the Perfect Link Builder. In his article, Eric shared his views on what qualities a good link builder should have based on his own experience as a content publicist and link building strategist. In summary, the key characteristics of a good link builder are outlined below:
* has work experience in a business or academic setting
* has preferably Library Science as academic background, but may also have a degree in business, communications, or public relations
* extremely detail oriented
* can spend long hours focused on a task with little supervision and outside input
* a curious and organized mind
* a willingness to work with quiet diligence for little recognition
* high intellectual curiosity (not high IQ)
* a deep fascination with the online world
* a sense of humor to deal with the mean spiritedness of the web
* a willingness to ask why and what if (questioning authority does not necessarily mean defying it)
* an unwillingness to give up and a strong determination to reach goals
* The ability to shift gears and follow the scent when it presents itself is absolutely vital.
* a deep passion for link building
The following characteristics of a good link builder are added from Raj Dash’s SearchEngineJournal article. According to him, a good link builder:
* really understands the purpose of link building
* has or can build a repertoire of different link building techniques
* considers link building as a long-term effort
* is an extrovert who can mingle well with others online no matter the nationality, gender, age or professional background
* has creativity with words as well as technical knowledge, or at least is able to learn technical skills for blogging and technical copywriting
* has storytelling ability, the skill to capture the imagination of others
* respects the intelligence of readers and others they encounter online
