- Exchange links with website that are relevant with yours — preferably those that operate within the same industry but not highly competitive with your site or brand. Users who visit these sites are more likely to click on your link to find other related info. They are the targeted visitors your site needs.
- Do not request link exchanges from sites that are unrelated to your website, especially those related to porn, online pharmacy services, and gambling.

- Keep your link title short but keyword rich. However, refrain from using the same words again and again.
- Keep your link’s description brief, preferably 150 characters or less. Move keywords as near the beginning of the sentence as possible.
- Do not capitalize letters either in your title or description.
- Do not use exclamation points, question marks or periods. Dashes and colons are acceptable.
- Refrain from using words like “free”, “sale”, or “best” in your link’s description or title. Do not exaggerate or offer promos. This will make your link appear spammy and can be cause for rejection.

- When writing an email for a request to exchange links, do not give a webmaster a deadline on when they should reciprocate. Likewise, do not threaten them of not reciprocating if you don’t see a reciprocal link at their site.
- Let the webmaster know that you have indeed visited their site and explain to them why a reciprocal link exchange with your website would be beneficial. Likewise, do not exaggerate facts and claim that a 100,000 visitors come to your site every day when this is not true. Instead be upfront with your site’s performance metrics and offer alternative deals such as content hosting, banner hosting, or ad placements.
In Optimizing Your Link Pages…
- Create link pages or link directories that are search engine friendly. No more than a 100 links should be found on one page. These include the internal links of your site and navigational menu links, and even banner, button and other image links.
- Categorize your links into groups according to their niche. The more relevant they are to your site, the better. Remember: it’s not the quantity of links, but the quality they possess in terms of value and traffic.
- Link your link page from your site’s homepage so it will be just one click away from the domain’s index page. This will make your link page visible to both search engines and users.
Link Exchange Ethics
- Never remove a link partner once they have agreed to exchange links with you and has placed your link at their site.
- Avoid participating in free-for-all link programs or link farms, especially those that automate the process. To make your link building efforts worthy do the link building process manually instead of relying in automated programs or services. This way you will have more control over who links to you and to whom you link to.
