Here’s something I didn’t know…
I was just over at HannibalKing’s blog, The Repository. He has an interesting post there on Six Internal Linking Strategies to get to the top of the Google SERPs.
The first tactic listed wasn’t that unusual. I already knew that, I thought. But the second one is something I haven’t considered. Using the rel=”nofollow” attribute to distribute Page Rank? Whoa! It’s nothing but brilliant!
Yes, I very much agree Page Rank leaked from a strong homepage should be effectively distributed to more important inner pages, especially when there is a high probability an increase in traffic will be gained when deep linking these pages. Inner pages such as sitemaps or link directories, or even sign-up forms shouldn’t suck too much of that precious PR juice from more worthy pages.
Also, from the list which HannibalKing posted, number Five is another hitherto unthought of proposition. Using the same rel=”nofollow” attribute inner pages can be prevented from lending PR value on the word “home” pointing to the site’s homepage. In effect, these internal pages receive a one way link from the homepage and do not reciprocate the favor. This one way internal linking strengthens your site’s inner pages’ Page Rank. Moreover, this tactic does not diminishes the Page Rank strength of the website’s homepage. The backlinks’ PR goodness pouring into the homepage are enough to hold it up against succeeding PR updates from Google.
