Choose The Right Search Engine For Your Needs

Posted by on Internet, seo tips

The Internet has made it ideal for anyone to research, look up, investigate, or even purchase anything desired. By now the majority of the planet is familiar with the term search engine. Most of us even have a favorite search engine we make use of on a daily basis. I have a preferenec for Google my self. A variety of these Internet helpers are simple to use and free. Whether it be Yahoo.com, Lycos.com, or Askjeeves.com, the searches hold endless results.

When trying to decide on a search engine, it is good to do some routine browsing on Search Engine Optimization. Simply type in a sport, object, or hobby of your preference and do a search. Try it under a number of search engines. In fact, look up a variety of things. This way you will get a good idea of which search engine covers the best or most desirable results.

Back in college, I have used a broad range of search tools online (i.e. Yahoo!, directory listings) to find school-related topics for my term papers. Eventually I came to trust Google’s search results in giving me what I was exactly looking for. Later on, I learned that the results vary depending on the data center used, the time of day and keywords typed in (i.e. misspellings). We all are in need of different things, and sometimes rare ones.

I remember when I was in need of specific information on case studies of various mental disorders. This started me on a long and tedious search at the campus library for long hours. No offense to my Alma Mater, but not everything can be found in the University library any longer. Using an Internet search engine is the best likely option to come up with the kind of results I needed for my research. While libraries certainly still hold a place in college life and research, I personally prefer these technological wonders of the cyber world.

Once you’ve made your choice on the kind of search engine to use, it seems almost difficult to switch to another. I guess we get used to the convenience and routine of using that one search engine that changing it seems nothing more than a burden. Although search engines can be and are a great tool for finding things and discovering new worlds, some sites offered are rather unreliable. It is always good to check sources and where data and ideas came from. All too often you will run into mere uneducated opinions that hold little validity when doing true research for school and work.

Why Google is the Authority

Google uses Hyper-Text Matching Analysis when ranking webpages in its search engine results. Its crawlers would “read” the text on any web page and analyse which words or phrases are most “relevant” for that web page. Relevancy is thought to be based on the frequency the keywords were mentioned on the page, the semantic relationships of the keywords with other text surrounding it, and the topical relevance of the anchor text in links found both on the site and on other sites with the prominently associated keywords. Frankly speaking, crawlers and search engine algorithms can not measure meaning or context, but it can measure frequency and relativity with other objects found on the same page or on other pages.

Despite the advances in semantic technology, Google still needs human readers to evaluate how relevant a page is to a certain keyword or topic. This “evaluation” is numerically converted by using Page Rank, and in calculating the page’s or site’s popularity among users through measurement of clickthroughs on search engine results pages (SERPs). The more people clicking you link on SERPs, the more relevant your site is to the keyword the user has just typed.

Another ranking factor which Google also uses in tandem with Page Rank is Trust Rank. This is a different type of measurement in that it indicates how well users trust a site. In this area, trust is paired with authority and branding. An authority site is considered to be aged because it has survived through time, to have more backlinks with sites that operate in the same industry or category, and has backlinks that are aged because the same sites that link to them have a medium to high authority in the same niche as they are.

Such link building feat may appear implausible, but not impossible. This is often achieved through successful branding. Your product’s or your company’s reputation must precede all their online activities so that once a visitor lands on their site there is already a relationship between a possible client and your product or company.

It amazes me how the same search term gives vastly different results depending on the search engine used.

Well, each search engine has its set of criteria. Google tends to favor those sites with uniquely relevant content and as many relevant backlinks as the others in the niche. Yahoo! on the other hand leans more towards quality of links. Other search engines follow the steps of these two major giants, and yet can not duplicate the advances in search technology Google and YahoO! have made. After all, trade secrets should be kept hidden at all times. Or changed quickly when some clever optimizers appear to have figured them out.

    :) Thanks for commenting, Sire!

No worries. I usually start off with Google, but if I do not like the results I use Yahoo. If that doesn’t work I just chuck it in.

Good post. I actually have a habit of collecting search engines and have a vast array of really effective ones for different needs. There are tons of specialty engines out there but they are hard to find. I bookmark them whenever I come across them.

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment, Manodogs! :) I used to do that, too. But I got tired of the list. If I can use only a few for my needs, I could get rid of the rest that clutter my bookmarks. So I chose the best ones from the crowd and ignored the rest.
